A Mother Here

"In Her Image" - Jennifer Smith. Third Place. This work is mixed media (oil and floral decoupage) on canvas paper. The impulse behind the work came from my desire to create an image of the Prime Female as a being representative of the human race as a whole. I would love all women who view this image to feel as though they are made perfectly; in image of a Heavenly Mother who embraces and embodies all possibilities of skin/eye/hair color facial features etc.

Mother Goose

How deeply I love you, my Mother!!!

How I wish you had loved me.

You couldn’t.

You couldn’t do it!!!

You were just a shell,

A shell left over from rape,

From an unwanted pregnancy,

A baby boy you never saw, never held, never wanted.

I’m told you were abused as well.

By your father.

That is impossible for me to imagine.

It must have been someone else.

Who hurt you?

Who formed the monster you became with me?

How do you possibly justify what you did to me?

By telling the world I was “crazy”

So no one would listen if I told.

I never told.

What would be the point?

You took away or killed everything I ever loved.

You definitely tried.

You wanted me to see you

as having total power over me.

You wanted me to believe that you were

too powerful to ever be questioned.

What I know I KNOW is

You were never powerful at all,

 You were pitiful.

With all your manipulations.

All your attempts to control.

All your lies.

You are a liar!!!

Just a liar.

Your teeth caved in.

Eaten away, turned upon themselves.

Dead, dead, dead like you!!!

I wish this had a pretty ending.

But…it is what it is.

There are times when we have to be

thankful for what is!!!

I AM grateful for the way things really were!!!

You made me stronger than

I ever could have possibly imagined!!!

Without intending to do it,

You made me exactly what I AM TODAY!!!

STRONG, HEALTHY, INVINCIBLE,

UNBREAKABLE, UNDISPUTED, INDISPUTABLE,

IMMACULATE, WEATHER-PROOF.

I AM SOMEONE WHO CANNOT

POSSIBLY BE BEATEN!!!

I AM UNBEATABLE!!!

UNBEATABLE!!!

UNBEATABLE!!!

UN BEATEN!!!

UN BEATEN!!!

UN BEATEN!!!

I AM ALIVE!!!

I AM ALIVE!!!

I AM ALIVE!!!

I REMAIN ALIVE FOREVER!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you,

thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Happiness & Quiet Enjoyment

Two days ago I learned that, due to budget cuts, mental patients throughout the state of North Carolina are now being released from hospitals although no place(s) have been prepared for them to go.

Busy as usual, at first this did not receive much of my attention. However, it quickly became apparent that some work to “heal” this situation would be required of me.

That same night, during a Bible study for women and children, one woman announced quite loudly that she had been without her medications for ten days now. As if on cue, a second woman began to goad the first, who rapidly grew angrier, spoke increasingly more loudly, then began throwing things, cursing, and threatening the second as well as several other women in the room with death and an ass-whooping, including the teachers. The escalation was very rapid. The women in attendance did not immediately respond appropriately. Then came the burst of feverish activity.

Amid 911 calls, prayers for help, peace, and calm, and a bit of Reiki (It never hurts!), an unexpected situation that might have been disastrous was effectively defused.

That night, I didn’t sleep as soundly as I normally do. My peaceful feathers felt the teensiest bit ruffled.

So…the next morning, I sought out one of my favorite peaceful places for the customary daily hour-long devotional. Watching the glorious sunrise, the gold, pink, mauve, and purple hues briefly blessed my vision and the incredible blue of sky, as gratitude poured from me to the powers that be. Every sunrise, unique in all creation, is perfect.

A sound to my right caused me to look at immediate surroundings. A man approached, shuffling rapidly toward me. The thought that came was, “He’s going to ask me for a cigarette.” Not the least unusual. Sorry, fella, I can’t help with that.

As he neared, the scruffy hair and beard became evident. He hadn’t washed. The man shoved his front against me. I could smell every hair! Before I could ask what he wanted, he began yelling. “You have to get right with God! You’re a backslider!”

“Sir, I believe I’m okay with God.”

“You have blue eyes! You’re a German!”

“God bless you!”

He began shuffling away, throwing curses and accusations of backsliding as he went.

Grabbing my things, I walked into a McDonald’s a short distance away. Choosing the most remote table, I grabbed a biscuit, definitely not my usual breakfast fare, and spread out my notebook, pens, and morning reading. Settling down, very glad to be alone and focused again, I noted the sound of an electric shopping cart.

“There you are! I found you!” He drove the cart almost up to the table where I sat.

“How can I help you, sir?”

“You f****n Nazi war criminal! I know who you are! The d**n German prisoners stayed here after the war, didn’t have the money to go home. They bred up here in the mountains. That’s who you are!”

Without a word, speechless, in fact, I slowly rose and walked to the front counter. The store manager was there. Thankfully, he was a large, very fit man.

The other man, God bless him, quickly walked up behind me. “You’re a snitch! You’re up here snitching on me, ain’t cha!”

Using my quietest voice, locking eyes with the man, I say, “I won’t listen to anymore of this.”

Security arrived. The man screamed repeatedly, “I’m a cop and she’s my snitch!”

Determined, I went back to my table, finished breakfast, organized my work of the day. Walking quietly for almost an hour, then sitting to contemplate, I really, honestly considered changing my original plan and doing something else for the day.

As I sat, though, it became obvious that the day was still mine and I was free to choose whatever I desired. I did a Reiki treatment for safety and proceeded to my peaceful place.

No matter what time of day or how hot the weather, this place always, always has a cool breeze and total shade. It’s lovely. Yesterday, as I entered the gate, a large black king snake, the yellow-bellied kind, greeted me. King snakes keep their territories free of toxic/poisonous snakes and other pests/vermin. He lay there, gazing up at me as if to say, “This is a safe, clean area for every being here. Enjoy it in peace and love.”

So I did. Stretching out on a wooden bench, I wrote, read, munched grapes & cheese, and finally slept. It was glorious, and profoundly peaceful.

I haven’t blogged in ages. It’s time.

I’m asking, please, everyone who will, please do a bit of remote work for those who are misplaced, homeless, without meds, hungry, confused, etc., etc., etc. Please work to smooth their way, provide what is needed, and bless them with what is truly best for them.

There are some who seek to rob us/you/me of our rights.  Under the guise of asserting their own rights, they intend and seek to strip us of ours.

As is true of beauty, race, ethnicity, culture, and social status, are often in the eye of the beholder. Some humans have laid claim to truly impaired perceptual abilities.

Reiki is one of the greatest gifts in my entire existence. I cannot overstate this. It is my truth. One of the outgrowths of my journey with Reiki is that I truly, genuinely desire that everyone does have what is best for her/him at every level, on every step of their own personal path.

If you have time or inclination, ask yourself the following questions:

Four Questions for Growth

1. What is the most magnificent gift I can give to life in the next three years?

2. How can I become optimally more powerful in a way that’s safe and wise?

3. How can I nurture my relationships so that they thrive even as my life continues changing?

4. What can I do that guarantees me all the love I desire/need?

Healing the Earth, one treatment at a time.
Raising awareness of autism, violence against women & children, and homelessness.

The Gift of Reiki

Big Sur CA

This must be Heaven!

Applied knowledge, applying the principles, sharing and teaching what we have learned, settling in, and being comfortable in our own skins are all included in the experience of Reiki.

During and following attunement, there is such an onrush of new and recalled info coming in that we can be hard pressed to do anything except receive.  Later, as we begin to actively give, it often behooves us to take several looks at what and whom surrounds us.  We attract precisely those experiences, individuals, and items that work us through our own issues.

Some of you are thinking, “But I don’t have any issues.”  If you are living in nirvana with never so much as a bobble, perhaps this is true.  But if you still inhabit the physical plane and you ever experience even the slightest ripple, here’s a news flash for you:  Our primary work is always on ourselves.

The woman who attuned me to Reiki taught that when we attain wellness, we discover that our focus is no longer on the sick and afflicted.  We work on the sick only when we have something within us that requires healing.

In the same vein, perhaps we teach only when we have something to learn.  Those who teach learn more than their students.  Through the years, I’ve considered this frequently.

Why Reiki?  What are the limitations of Reiki and consciousness?  Are there any limits outside our own egos?

Reiki changes consciousness.

Reiki perfects consciousness.

Reiki attuned me to the incredible richness of breath, the flow of life-giving molecules, the sensual impact of flowers and sky, the kiss of wind, the beauty of water on skin, the nourishment of sunlight.

Reiki imparts the fullness of the joy of living.  With Reiki comes the awareness that I AM truly okay.  There is no requirement to earn the right to enjoy my life or the right to be here.  It is perfect to be who and what I AM without apology or reservation.

I have become my inner child.  I breathe as a child, I see as a child, live as a child, think as a child, speak as a child, and relate as a child.  My best friends are children.

Reiki has also made me aware of the perfection of others.  Anyone can find fault.  Are we not taught to do so?  Finding perfection is an ability worth cultivating.  Following a lifetime of brainwashing, it requires a bit of practice.

For me, these are the best, finest gifts of Reiki.  Not acclaim, not accolades, not even acknowledgement.  Nor fame, financial gain, publicity and money.

Reiki has made me aware of my own humanity.  Reiki has taught me that humility and humiliation are not the same thing.  Reiki has made me functional.

Each one who embraces Reiki has a unique experience that is perfect for his own growth.  Just as infants do not all walk or talk at the same age, we each experience Reiki at our own pace and capacity.  Reiki meets us where we are and takes us farther than we have ever imagined, in the ways that are perfect for us.

Until next post, namaste!

Putting Out the Trash

Good morning!  It’s been a while since there’s been a new post here.  New day, new month, so much going on, blogging took a very brief back seat.  We’re back!  Is almost everyone in clearing mode right now?  We have been, meaning myself and my loved ones.  No uncomfortable cleaning/clearing this time, just deep, long awaited, joyous release of emotions, things, and thoughts that no longer fit.

There was minor retrying-on of a few items.  If they do still fit, why get rid of them?  But for the most part, everyone is on track and blissfully moving forward in our truly enjoyable present, without all the old encumbrances.  FREEDOM!

One of my daughters has a mandate in her own family, home, and life:  Donate, give or otherwise remove everything not currently in use.  Obviously this does not include financial records or holiday decorations, but everything else is fair game!  I’ve accused her of being fanatical about this.  She swears it keeps the energy of her life moving, flowing, and bringing in wondrous new stuff that’s way better than all the old put together.  And she hasn’t even studied feng shui!

Many folks cling to things, ideas, and habits out of fear.  Merely considering letting go of some parts of our lives can be scary, although they long ago became useless, even unhealthy.  If you’ve ever watched a show about hoarding, you already know this. Useless clutter interferes with functionality as well as beauty and peacefulness, as well as providing a haven for dirt and filth. Hoarding is undeniably unhealthy.

But what about just hanging onto such things as food choices that don’t keep us healthy, choosing criticism rather than bestowing a compliment, or continuing to smoke because, “I’m not ready to give it up!  I really enjoy smoking.”

Recently I read a remark that, compared to the Gulf oil spill, “My smoking doesn’t seem so bad!”  That floored me to utter silence. The person making that remark is an intelligent, lovely person who has stubbornly clung to her tobacco habit even though it has cost her clients, friends, and loved ones.  The habit was more important to her than anyone else’s comfort, and people left her life.  I was one of them.

She introduced me to other smokers, perhaps with the intent that I would “get used to it”.  I didn’t.  What happened in my life, in response to constant reminders that, “I have a right to light!” was that I assumed a silent stand that I have a right to breathe clean air, to fill my lungs with oxygen, and to enjoy the smells of my home and my surroundings!

Looking back, I have much to thank this woman for!  I did learn to quietly, firmly stand up for what is right for me, and to let go of behaviors, people, relationships, and things that do not belong in my harmonious, peaceful life.  She literally forced me into it, and I’m eternally grateful!

A couple of times, I wondered if she ever missed my presence in her life.  I doubt that she ever did.  In fact, I’m certain that she still prefers her cigarettes and other habits to the friendship of anyone who cannot hang with consumption of her second-hand and third-hand smoke.

The bottom line is, everyone gets to make their own choices here! Short of your doing something glaringly illegal, and often not even then, no one comes into your life and rips away the things you cling to.  Many of us fear the discomfort of change.  Those with actual addictions fear the physical pain and agony of withdrawing from what they are choosing to hang onto.

We who do periodic cleaning/clearing of ourselves, bodies, homes, and personal spaces, come to enjoy even the symptoms of clearing because these symptoms herald the freedom and clarity that follow!

My personal journey with Reiki has been one of pursuing functionality and seeking health.  I’ve learned to be comfortable with everyone’s choices, including my own when it becomes necessary to let go of all that hurts me.  Yes, at times this includes leaving behind people that I genuinely love.  The love never departs.  Fortunately, I love myself enough to set and honor the boundaries that make my own life enjoyable.

To me, this is what Reiki is all about.  As we live day-to-day according to The Reiki Principles, it becomes first nature to KNOW OUR SELVES, and to joyously live accordingly!  The Reiki Precepts teach us how to live; they are guidelines for living the best life.  When we have mastered that, there is time enough to treat others, to be politically active, and to seek whatever else we desire.

Here is a loose translation of The Reiki Precepts into the English language:

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today I will not worry.
Just for today I will not anger.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today I will love and respect every living thing.

May we all be blessed with the most abundant life ever!  Until next post, Namaste!

One Reiki Family

Under the sky, under the heaven, there is but one family.

Bruce Lee

When introduced to Reiki way back when, I thought everybody practiced Reiki the same way.  It wasn’t until a bit later that we were told about The Reiki Alliance.  Looking back, we in the Light Therapy tradition were given very little information about other traditions and ways of practicing Reiki.  Bits and pieces floated to my awareness occasionally.  These were filed away for future reference, just in case.  But for the most part, I stuck with what I’d been taught and had little idea what had been handed down to practitioners of Reiki traditions other than my own.

Some years later, I met a woman whose lineage did not include Takata.  Our discussions provided me additional information regarding Reiki and its origins, and about how Reiki has evolved since its inception.  My practice of Reiki remained the same.  While I had opened to the fact that Reiki practices are somewhat like DNA and fingerprints, it didn’t occur to me that anyone was “wrong” or egotistical or “not real Reiki”.

When I recently began following a Reiki group on LinkedIn, I experienced mild surprise with one discussion in particular.  The question presented has to do with how many attunements are correctly given in the Usui system.  My thought, of course, was that I didn’t comprehend why this would ever be an issue.  What was the problem?

However, the discussion became quite lively, and I noticed what I perceived as likely being bias and/or competition involving the various traditions represented by those in the group.  At first this bothered me.  Then, light bulb!!!!!

Since I was the one perceiving issues within the group, I must be the one with the issues!  It was my job to work on that.  So, as always, I proceeded to do exactly that.

My greatest joy would be to know that we are all one Reiki family and that we function and support one another as equals although our individual practices do vary.  In some traditions, hand positions are standardized and symbol reception/use is treated with distrust or suspicion.  In other traditions, symbol reception is commonplace, being the norm rather than the rarity, and there is fluidity/flow during treatment and attunement, with much reliance upon intuitive data and the assistance of guides.  Yet, we are all undeniably attuned in the Usui system.

There was a time of bickering and oneupmanship in the world wide Reiki community, early on.  We are not children anymore, and the world we all inhabit is in dire need of the most positive influences all of us can provide.  We have a responsibility, collectively as well as individually, as one Reiki family as well as proud members of the traditions we came up in.  We should be proud of our Reiki roots.  At the same time, we have an obligation to educate the medical community and the public about the benefits of Reiki.  Undeniably, this includes the necessity of providing all appropriate education to Reiki practitioners and teachers.

I AM profoundly grateful to better understand why there was once an effort to standardize Reiki.  However, in my own observations, the highest standards invariably arise within the individual practitioner rather than being arbitrarily set by a person or group assuming ownership/control of Reiki.  While it pains me immeasurably to witness the countless offers of free attunements, cheap attunements, and self-attunements being advertised to unsuspecting consumers who desire to learn about Reiki but are reluctant to pay the prices normally charged by reputable teaching masters, what bothers me most is the disillusion that results when students choose less-than-the-best for themselves.  Often these students become disillusioned with Reiki itself, rather than with the teacher of their own choosing.

As practitioners and teaching masters, how do we repair and reverse this?  Obviously, we can set our own standards at a very high level, we can honor the Reiki that flows through us, and we can be in every way one Reiki family.  We can begin consciously seeking out our similarities as well as celebrating the entire spectrum of Reiki traditions and forms.  We can honor and respect one another as professional equals.  We can fearlessly, lovingly share the truth and essence of who we are as Reiki practitioners.

WE CAN BE THE LOVE THAT WE ALL ARE.
